Tandem skydiving – what the full experience looks like, step by step
A tandem skydive is not just the moment you exit the aircraft – it is a complete experience that starts upon arrival at the airport and ends with a safe landing, guided by a professional tandem instructor at every stage.
Below is a detailed guide through the standard tandem skydiving procedure, so you know exactly what to expect in advance.
Arrival at the drop zone
One of the most memorable days of your life begins with arrival at the tandem skydiving location. Exact directions and airport details will be provided in advance via our interactive map or through direct contact with our team.
If you selected organized transportation during booking, departure usually takes place in the morning. Drop zones typically offer a relaxed atmosphere, café facilities, and plenty of space to unwind before the jump. If you arrive with your own vehicle, simply arrive at the agreed time stated in your confirmation email.
Meeting the team and your tandem instructor
Upon arrival, you will meet the team guiding you through the entire process. This includes ground staff, tandem instructors, camera flyers (if you selected a video/photo package), and other jumpers scheduled for the day.
At this stage, most first-time jumpers notice their initial nervousness turning into excitement.
Paperwork and required documentation
After introductions comes the administrative part – not the most exciting, but essential. This includes signing the waiver and any required documentation. Once completed, you proceed to a short ground briefing.
Pre-jump briefing (approx. 15 minutes)
Before every tandem skydive, a short but crucial briefing is conducted, lasting about 15 minutes. Your instructor explains the aircraft exit, correct body position during freefall, parachute deployment, canopy flight, landing procedures, and basic characteristics of tandem skydiving equipment.
Gearing up for the tandem skydive
After the briefing, you gear up. You will put on a jumpsuit, harness connection system, helmet, goggles, and gloves if required. Before boarding the aircraft, your instructor performs a full equipment check to ensure everything is correctly fitted.
Boarding the aircraft and takeoff
Once everything is ready, you head toward the aircraft. At this moment, adrenaline typically increases – which is completely normal. Inside the aircraft, your instructor reviews exit position, freefall basics, and seating until jump altitude.
Aircraft climb to jump altitude
The flight to jump altitude takes several minutes and offers a unique panoramic view. For many participants, this is their first flight in a small sport aircraft, adding to the overall experience.
Exit from the aircraft
The aircraft door opens and fresh air fills the cabin. Your instructor positions you correctly for exit. The view of the ground several kilometers below is powerful and unforgettable. Countdown follows: 3 – 2 – 1 – GO!
Freefall
You leave the aircraft and enter freefall. Your body accelerates smoothly to approximately 220 km/h (about 120–140 mph). The sensation of freedom and the view below are difficult to describe in words. Freefall lasts between 30 and 60 seconds, depending on jump altitude.
Parachute deployment
Parachute opening feels like a brief but firm deceleration. This marks the transition into a new phase of the skydive – calm, controlled canopy flight, which many describe as equally impressive as freefall.
Canopy flight (5–10 minutes)
Canopy flight lasts approximately 5 to 10 minutes, depending on conditions and preferences. You can choose between a more dynamic flight with gentle maneuvers or a relaxed panoramic glide. Due to the lower speed, communication with your instructor is easy, and in some moments you may even be allowed to steer the parachute briefly.
Landing preparation and touchdown
At around 100 meters altitude, landing preparation begins. On the instructor’s command “LEGS UP”, you raise both legs to hip height with feet extended. The tandem pair lands safely either on the instructor’s feet or seated, depending on wind conditions. After landing, ground staff or the instructor assists you in removing the equipment.
Receiving your video/photo package
A few days after your jump, you will receive an email with a download link
via a large-file transfer service (such as WeTransfer, SwissTransfer, etc.).
The download link is time-limited, so we recommend downloading your video promptly.
If you don’t see the email in your inbox, please check your spam folder.
If you share your video on social media, feel free to tag us — we’ll gladly reshare your experience.
The end? Or just the beginning
For many, a tandem skydive is only the beginning. A large number of participants decide to continue skydiving and enroll in formal training afterward. As we like to say – one jump often changes how you see your own limits.
